The Focke-Wulf 190 That Made the Spitfire Obsolete — And How Britain Answered It

Focke-Wulf 190: when the Fw 190A appeared over the English Channel in the autumn of 1941, it made the Spitfire Mk V obsolete overnight, and for eleven months the RAF could not beat it, match it, or even identify it. Faster, harder-hitting and out-rolling everything Fighter Command flew, Kurt Tank's "Butcher Bird" seized air superiority over occupied France. British pilots reported a radial-engined fighter that could out-dive and out-climb them at every altitude. Intelligence first dismissed it as a captured French Curtiss Hawk. The Air Fighting Development Unit later confirmed the Fw 190A was 25-35 mph faster than the Spitfire V, superior in the dive, climb and rate of roll, and beaten only in the turning circle. The crisis broke by accident. On 23 June 1942, Oberleutnant Armin Faber of JG 2 mistook the Bristol Channel for the English Channel and landed his Fw 190A-3 intact at RAF Pembrey in Wales, handing Britain the prize it had considered a commando raid to steal. Trials at Farnborough and Duxford confirmed the worst and accelerated the answer: the two-stage Rolls-Royce Merlin 61 married to a Spitfire airframe to create the Mk IX. More than 20,000 Fw 190s were built during the war by Focke-Wulf, Ago, Arado and Fieseler across occupied Europe. This is the story of how the British system adapted under pressure while the German system could not sustain its own advantage.
