Bilbao felt a little different from what I had expected. Modern architecture, old Basque streets, a river running through the city, and hills that begin almost immediately beyond the last houses. The only thing that didn’t quite cooperate after I arrived was the weather. Over the course of a few hours, I visit the Guggenheim Museum, walk along the river into the Old Town, stop at Mercado de la Ribera, and take the funicular up above Bilbao. For my first encounter with the Basque Country, it’s a surprising number of experiences packed into a single day. Then my plans suddenly change—I buy a train ticket and set off across northern Spain.
