The harvesting of pirarucu in the São Francisco da Mangueira Community, in the Middle Solimões region of Juruá, Amazonas, is a traditional and important activity for the local economy. The pirarucu is a large, jumping fish. When threatened, especially during harvesting, it tends to jump out of the net, potentially injuring itself or even those working to catch it. Furthermore, it needs to breathe out of the water and, when prevented from doing so, it drowns. The harvesting of pirarucu is an activity that takes place every year in many riverside communities in Amazonas.
