What Ben Macintyre Got Wrong About Paddy Mayne

Ben Macintyre’s SAS: Rogue Heroes has become one of the most influential modern books about the wartime SAS, but how reliable is its portrayal of Paddy Mayne? In this video, I compare Macintyre’s version with the evidence presented in Hamish Ross’s family-approved biography, examining the disputed prison-cell recruitment story, claims about sectarianism and sexuality, the portrayal of Mayne as a reckless drunk, and the book’s reliance on myths repeated by David Stirling and earlier writers. I also explain how some of these stories influenced the television series and admit where I previously repeated them in my own videos. This is not an attack on Macintyre’s ability as a writer, but a detailed look at how gripping storytelling can distort a complex historical figure and leave readers with a deeply misleading understanding of Paddy Mayne and the real wartime SAS.
