Maria de Molina (c. 1265-1321) was one of the most influential political figures in medieval Castile. Wife of Sancho IV, her marriage was initially considered invalid by the Church, which called into question the dynastic rights of her son, Ferdinand IV. Upon her husband's death in 1295, she assumed the regency to protect her son's throne, facing a divided nobility, the Infante John of Castile, the House of Lara and the threat of invasion from Aragon and Portugal. Her diplomatic astuteness and negotiating skills allowed her to maintain the unity of the kingdom in a context of internal struggles. Despite the nobility's attempts to weaken her power, she managed to obtain recognition of her son as king and ensured the stability of the Crown. With the coming of age of Ferdinand IV, her influence temporarily diminished, although she continued to be a key figure in Castilian politics. Following the premature death of Ferdinand IV in 1312, Maria de Molina assumed the regency again, this time on behalf of her grandson, Alfonso XI, a child of barely one year of age. Despite her advanced age and delicate state of health, she dedicated her last years to guaranteeing the governability of the kingdom and to quelling attempts at territorial fragmentation promoted by the nobility. She died on July 1, 1321 in Valladolid, leaving a legacy of firmness and diplomacy that cemented the stability of the kingdom.
