The manure from the free-range barn of dairy farmer Rik Lagendijk from Diessen is sent to a fruit grower or tree nursery. This week, the manure was removed from the barn as compost, and new wood chips were added. "We always do this before winter, so we can get through the winter a bit easier and the chips stay dry. It also stays dry in the summer because of the heat," Lagendijk notes. ZLTO, together with Delphy, has launched an initiative to connect dairy farmers and fruit growers. "The project involves processing the prunings from the fruit growers into compost in our barn, which could then be returned to the growers." The advantage over straw is that wood chips require much less bulk in the barn and need replacing less often because their load-bearing capacity decreases less quickly. "We have a good soil improver here, and it would be great if we could easily get rid of it," says Lagendijk. • About Nieuwe Oogst • Nieuwe Oogst: the latest agricultural news!
