Land Rover 2.0 Petrol Hybrid P246C-00 Gasoline Particulate Filter GPF Restricion

Scan tool used is Launch UK Euro Tab 3 from www.launchtech.co.uk Troubleshooting a Land Rover 2.0 Petrol Hybrid: Addressing the GPF Restriction Issue Land Rover owners know their vehicles are synonymous with luxury and performance, but even high-end machines encounter challenges. Recently, a 2019 Range Rover with a 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid petrol engine presented a recurring issue: a gasoline particulate filter (GPF) system restriction. Fixing such problems can be tricky, especially when dealing with newer petrol particulate filter technology. Here’s a detailed account of how it was resolved effectively. Identifying the Issue Upon starting the vehicle, the warning “restricted performance” appeared, indicating reduced engine power. Using diagnostic equipment, the error codes pointed to a blockage in the gasoline particulate filter. The vehicle’s owner shared some background: it had been bought at a BCA auction “as is,” including an unresolved engine warning light. It seemed the car had a history of engine errors, partially addressed by previous repairs like a replaced camshaft sensor. However, the main problem—a clogged GPF—persisted. Gasoline particulate filters are less common than diesel ones, which made identifying acceptable soot or pressure levels more challenging. Diagnostic Steps To begin, all fault codes were cleared to see if the car generated fresh, useful data. After restarting the engine, live data analysis confirmed GPF-related issues. The problem persisted: a warning about regeneration duration, meaning the filter was struggling to burn off soot during its self-cleaning process. Unlike diesel particulate filters (DPF), petrol filters typically accumulate less soot due to cleaner burning fuel. Still, sensors showed that pressures within the exhaust system exceeded the acceptable limit. Locating the Problem It was clear additional steps were needed. Pressure sensors, hoses, and filter components were inspected, though accessing the GPF pressure sensor proved difficult. Positioned near the back of the engine and above the gearbox, the sensor was far from ideal for quick repairs. Signs of overheating, like discoloured components, also pointed to stress within the exhaust system. After extracting the sensor and connecting cleaning equipment, it became apparent just how hot the engine gets during operation. Petrol engines naturally run hotter than diesel ones, further complicating diagnostics. Cleaning the Gasoline Particulate Filter Special cleaning fluid was introduced into the particulate filter system to dissolve and remove soot buildup. Upon restarting the engine, white smoke—steam from the cleaner—became visible, a normal sign during such procedures. Next, the soot level parameter was rechecked through diagnostics. The vehicle software showed an alarming reading of 6.8 grams of soot, significantly above the acceptable limit of 1.5 grams for petrol systems. It was time to manually intervene. Reducing Soot Levels Since the car was still in restricted mode and unable to perform a typical regeneration drive (where the engine optimises performance to clean the filter), the soot levels were lowered manually. By holding the engine revs up, the cleaning fluid began breaking down soot deposits inside the filter gradually. Early results showed promise as the soot reading started dropping. To confirm progress, the car was taken for a short drive. Within half a mile, significant reductions in soot levels were recorded. After 15 minutes of driving, the soot levels finally fell below the required threshold of 1.5 grams. Final Adjustments and Results Despite clearing soot and resetting the particulate filter memory values via the diagnostic tool, the error codes persisted at first. Multiple attempts were made to ensure no miscommunication between the vehicle systems and diagnostic equipment. Ultimately, the soot level stabilised below the required limit, the “restricted performance” warning disappeared, and the car returned to its smooth, high-performing self. A final scan confirmed the system was free of error codes. The repair process successfully addressed the filter restriction while maintaining the vehicle’s functional integrity. Lessons Learned Gasoline particulate filters, while similar to their diesel counterparts, are relatively new and harder to troubleshoot withoutexperience. This process underscored the importance of patience, thorough diagnostics, and familiarity with vehicle systems to diagnose and resolve such uncanny issues.
