How Henna Affected My Type 4 Low Porosity Natural Hair

Hey everyone! I’ve been wanting to try Henna for years now, but I was afraid that my hair would turn orange. I started using a lot of heat in the past six months and I noticed a significant change in my hair. Instead of doing the regular protein and deep conditioning treatments, I decided to revisit the possibility of using Henna. I’ve watched countless YouTube videos and checked out many discussion forums online, and figured that it was time. I mean, if my hair is damaged from the heat then what more can I lose at this point? I dyed my hair purple (came out more like burgundy) last November and ever since then, my hair hasn’t been the same. Also, I wasn’t sure if my final result would be affected by the previous color, but I wanted to give it a try anyway. I wanted to see if Henna lived up to the hype of providing all these benefits such as: Helping fight off scalp conditions Balance oil production Boost hair growth Decrease shedding Strengthen and repairs Condition Thicken hair Loosen curl pattern I mixed my henna mix using Godrej Nupur Powder and warm coffee (I wanted to achieve a deep brown color), covered it with plastic wrap and let it sit overnight. I washed my hair prior to applying the Henna (washing your hair helps it stick to the cuticles). I applied my henna with gloves and coated my hair from root to tip. I let it sit in my hair for two hours and then I rinsed. Rinsing took me about 10 - 15 minutes. Once the Henna was rinsed out of my hair completely, I immediately noticed a change in my curls. They appeared to be more elongated and less defined than normal. I then applied my Deeper Moisture Conditioner by Giovanni and let that sit for approximately 30 minutes. Once I rinsed out my deep conditioner, I proceeded to style my hair. I did notice a slight color change from the henna, but I knew that I wouldn’t see the true color for another two to three days until the color fully developed. Overall, my experience with Henna was positive because I noticed that just after one application, my hair felt stronger and I had less shedding. For those reasons alone, I think I may use Henna again in the near future. Have you tried Henna before? If so, what did you use it for? Did you notice a change in your curl pattern?
