A viral video filmed in Miami shows a young Cuban man who, after being stopped for speeding in a restricted area and allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, had a tense confrontation with a police officer who—to his surprise—spoke perfect Spanish. The officer, with over 30 years of service, reprimanded him for his lack of respect in front of the cameras. According to the images circulating on social media, the officer explained that he had not disrespected them at any point, while the young men insulted him with profanities, even directing them at his family. The officer stated that, despite the provocation, he did not respond with aggression because "I am a police officer," and made it clear that the entire incident was recorded for a possible court hearing. The case reopens a recurring debate within the Cuban community of South Florida: the mistaken belief that in Miami "a police officer doesn't speak or understand Spanish." In a city where Spanish is practically the dominant language, that assumption exposed the young man, who assumed the officer wouldn't understand his insults. The incident was revisited and discussed on Alexander Otaola's program, where it was emphasized that the officer acted with integrity: had he called for backup, the driver could have ended up detained, given a breathalyzer test, and had his jet ski confiscated.
