SPIEF 2026: Putin Sends Strong Message To Trump On India’s Independent Foreign Policy

Russian President Vladimir Putin has delivered a strong message highlighting India’s independent foreign policy, while indirectly responding to growing pressure from the United States over New Delhi’s cooperation with Moscow. Speaking at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin stated that India has never followed any diktat from abroad and continues to make sovereign decisions based on its national interests. He also extended the same observation to China, stressing that sovereignty and independent decision-making cannot be challenged by external powers. The remarks come at a time when Washington has been urging India to scale back its energy and defence ties with Russia. Former US President Donald Trump had previously criticised India’s purchase of Russian oil, arguing that it supported Moscow’s war efforts in Ukraine, and imposed higher tariffs before later adjusting them. Putin, however, dismissed the broader idea of Russia being isolated internationally. He said such efforts, led by the United States and supported by Europe, have failed. According to him, Russia continues to maintain strong economic ties across regions and remains engaged in global cooperation, particularly in energy and strategic sectors. He further argued that global politics is driven by pragmatism, noting that even countries that publicly announced withdrawal from Russian projects continue to participate in key ventures.
