June 25, 2019 ABOUT Turkey’s united opposition attained a landslide victory against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Islamist-ultranationalist coalition on Sunday’s mayoral rerun in Istanbul. As Erdogan’s re-vote gamble backfired, Ekrem Imamoglu increased his margin of victory from just 13,000 to over 800,000. Erdogan’s debacle in a city where his political career started 25 years ago has raised the question whether this is the beginning of the end for Turkey’s president and his Islamist party.
