The Beatles Destroyed Rock Music (Here's Why)
Just to note, I just moved and haven't finished packing yet so if you see stuff in the shot no you didn't. And if you like this video, want access to exclusive content, early access, your name in the credits or just wanna support my very underfunded vision consider joining my Patreon linked here: patreon.com/squarecymbals Coming from Billy Corgan and his weird and lets be honest, racially charged statements from a month ago here we investigate what really happened to rock, why its no longer the mainstream popular force it used to be, and whether or not Eminem was the last bastion of white counter culture, saving young men from radicalization. This video examines controversial comments made by Jann Wenner regarding Black musicians and female artists, sparking a broader discussion on music history. We explore these statements and their implications for understanding cultural trends and social commentary within the music industry. This discussion adds to the ongoing dialogue found in many music documentaries, offering a critical look at the narratives surrounding rock music and the legacy of figures like The Beatles. We start by exploring the dance cultural roots of rock music, and how that was co-opted by white artist like Elvis. We then discuss The Beatles, and their cultural impact. And how it was music journalism, a la folks like Jann Wenner, and the addition of European cultural influences that cemented them as the most important band in the rock pantheon. From there we talk about the cultural tension within genre conventions during the 70s via the 'disco sucks' movement. And how genre functions in a racialized context, as well as the early punk movement as an expression of white rage and nihilism. The 80s brought more rock based subcultures with hair metal, trash and hardcore which eventually birthed grunge. From there we explore Billy Corgan and his beef with the band Pavement, and how this feud encapsulates the hyper serious solipsism of the era, leading to a bland radio culture full of carbon copies. We take a look at Eminem as a counter culture figure, but address the reality of him being politically in step with most of young white America at the time, and a sadly lost influence going into the mid 2000s. We examine the 1996 Telecommunications Act, and how that did a better job of stopping new band discovery. Finally we explore the Ticketmaster/Live Nation merger as another factor in limiting music access. 00:00 Intro 04:19 Y'all didn't even want us here 07:14 "intellectualizing" Rock 16:16 White Boys Having Fun 19:59 Alright Again Faster 23:21 Do I Care? 25:47 Absolutely no one, no one but myself to blame 28:36 IJDGAF 20:27 White Teenage Cynicism 30:36 Counter Culture? 39:18 It was always Capitalism, Racism and Misogyny Sources: Big ups to Dasia Sade, you can find her Eminem vid here: • the eminem sized hole in white america Corgan our conversation starter: • Conrad Flynn | The Magnificent Others with...
