The Real Man Who Recorded the Titanic’s Final Hours
"It fills me with astonishment now to think of it." In this episode of Reborn Voices, we bring to life the incredible first-hand testimony of Lawrence Beesley, a second-class passenger on the RMS Titanic. While many accounts of the 1912 disaster focus on chaos and panic, Beesley’s story describes a surreal, quiet transition from a peaceful evening of reading to a desperate leap for survival. From noticing the strange "dancing motion" of his mattress to witnessing the first distress rockets split the silent night, Beesley provides a unique perspective on the "indulgently smiling" stewards and the passengers who joked about using iceberg ice for their drinks, unaware that the ship was already sinking. The Historical Context Lawrence Beesley was one of the 712 survivors of the disaster. Of the approximately 2,224 passengers and crew on board, more than 1,500 perished. Statistics from the sinking highlight the disparity in survival rates across classes: First Class: ~62% survived. Second Class: ~41% survived (including Beesley). Third Class: ~25% survived.
