This time, we explain the "types of parts of speech" learned in junior high school Japanese grammar and introduce mnemonics for them. The smallest unit of a sentence is called a "word," and the classification of words is called a "part of speech," of which there are 10 types in total. Words can be divided into two types: "independent words," which have meaning on their own, and "dependent words," which do not have meaning on their own. Further subdivision of independent words: ① Independent words that do not conjugate ・Nouns… Names of things, substantives ・Adverbs… Mainly modify verbs [Examples] very, slowly, etc. ・Attributive adjectives… Modify substantives [Examples] that, big, etc. ・Conjunctions… Connect sentences [Examples] however, and, etc. ・Interjections… Emotion, address, greeting, etc. ② Independent words that conjugate (verbs) ・Verbs… Express actions, end with a "u" sound ・Adjectives… Express states or qualities, end with "i" ・Adjectival verbs… Express states or qualities, end with "da" Further subdivision of dependent words: ③ Dependent words that conjugate ・Auxiliary verbs… [Examples] "desu," "ta," etc. ④ Dependent words that do not conjugate ・Particles… [Examples] "ga," "wa," "o," "ni," etc. Here's a mnemonic to remember the types of parts of speech above: "Should I rent clothes for my niece?" "Get out of the way! Girl on the light road!"
