Composed by He Zhanhao and Chen Gang in 1959, it is based on the legendary Chinese love story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. The story follows Zhu Yingtai, a young woman who disguises herself as a man in order to pursue education in a time when women were not allowed to study freely. During her studies, she meets Liang Shanbo, and the two become close friends and eventually fall deeply in love. However, Zhu is later forced into an arranged marriage by her family. Liang dies of heartbreak before they can be together. In the final scene, Zhu visits Liang’s grave in deep sorrow, and the tomb miraculously opens. The two lovers are transformed into butterflies, symbolizing eternal love beyond death. Infused with the vocal inflections and expressive poise of traditional Chinese opera, Taiwanese violinist Hsueh Chih-Chang reimagines the Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto with striking originality and emotional depth. His interpretation traces the lovers’ journey from youthful innocence and tender romance to soul-rending separation and transcendent devotion, illuminating the eternal tensions between love and familial obligation, aspiration and reality, individual longing and the constraints of society. In his hands, Butterfly Lovers becomes not merely a concerto, but a poignant meditation on the beauty and tragedy of human affection. This performance evokes the seductive grace of Jiangnan’s scenery, the oppressive might of patriarchal authority, the agonized cries of defiance and despair, and the ineffable sorrow of a love story immortalized through the ages.
