And for now, she has no problems and happily runs around the pasture with her mother. Even so, she cannot become a racehorse. According to JRA regulations, horses that lose sight in one eye before being registered are not allowed to be registered (however, if a horse loses sight in only one eye after being registered, it can participate in flat races). Not being able to become a racehorse means it cannot be sold at auction, there is no economic benefit for the farm to raise it, and it is usually disposed of at birth. Thoroughbreds are economic animals, commodities.
