It’s 11:30 PM on a hot and humid night on Kish Island in southern Iran. While this island is known for its beaches and tourism, tonight feels different. In this video, I take you to the heart of the city, where local mourning groups (Hey’ats) have gathered to commemorate Muharram. Despite the intense heat and humidity, people have come together to observe this centuries-old tradition. You may notice a difference compared to my video from last year—the attendance seems lower this time.
