Tareas Antárticas

Compartimos un fascinante material audiovisual recuperado por el Proyecto de Rescate Integral del Cine Antártico Argentino del IAA y el Museo del Cine Pablo Ducrós Hicken. Se trata del documental a color “Tareas Antárticas” sobre el destacado rol de Argentina en el Año Geofísico Internacional 1957/8, evento científico internacional de mayor trascendencia en la historia polar austral y que abrió el camino a la firma del Tratado Antártico en 1959. En él se puede observar al General Hernán Pujato, primer Director del IAA, siendo relevado en su puesto de Jefe de la Base Belgrano I por el Mayor Jorge Edgard Leal, quien luego comandaría la primera expedición terrestre argentina al Polo Sur Geográfico y sería Director de la DNA. Se muestra al Beaver matrícula IAA-101, avión del Instituto Antártico Argentino con el que se realizaron los mayores descubrimientos geográficos argentinos en la Antártida. El montañista invernante del IAA Dinko Bertoncelj, protagonista de la película inaugural del cine de montaña argentino, es mostrado esquiando desde el rompehielos a la base. Meses después, realizaría allí la primera escalada técnica con fines científicos en la Antártida. También se retrata a los renombrados glaciólogos del IAA, René Dalinger y César Augusto Lisignoli, realizando estudios en el hielo para lograr los datos que otorgarían renombre al IAA en ese campo. This is the color documentary Antarctic Work, which explores Argentina's prominent role in the 1957–58 International Geophysical Year—the most significant international scientific event in the history of Antarctic exploration, which paved the way for the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959. In the documentary, we can see General Hernán Pujato, first Director of the Argentine Antarctic Institute, being relieved from his post as Chief at Belgrano I Station by Mayor Jorge Edgard Leal, who later would command the first Argentine land expedition to the South Pole and become Director of the AAI. There, we can see the Beaver aircraft belonging to the Argentine Antarctic Institute, registration number IAA-101, and with which Argentina's most significant geographical discoveries in Antarctica were made. The mountaineer and winterer from the AAI, Dinko Bertoncelj, and the star of the opening film at the Argentine Mountain Film Festival, is shown skiing from the icefall to base camp. Months later, he would complete the first technical climb in Antarctica for scientific purposes. The documentary also shows the renowned AAI glaciologists, Rene Dalinger and Cesar Augusto Lisignoli, conducting ice studies to gather the data that would bring the IAA international recognition in that field.
