Even after staring intently at the ground for hours starting early in the morning, the ginseng we were looking for was nowhere to be seen, and we had to cross several mountains to find it. In this mountain, Acer palmatum and Osmunda japonica formed colonies, and I saw the Silver Orchid, Lily of the Valley, and Arisaema in bloom. Although no wild ginseng was visible, quite a few wild Codonopsis roots were found, and Yellow Clematis and Potato Orchids were in bloom. During the weekend hike, we dug up only Codonopsis roots and did not see a single root of ginseng; we hiked laboriously for over eight hours. The next morning, I climbed the mountain again with my older brother and my younger brother, Jeong-man. Since this mountain is rocky and has many wild grape vines, our breathing became heavy right from the start of the climb. The mountain we moved to was also steep and overgrown with grass, making it quite a challenge. Here, I discovered wild peonies in bloom. While white peonies are easy to spot on high mountains, the red-flowered wild peonies are rarely seen. After seeing the wild peonies, I crossed another mountain and found young ginseng two days later; several roots of four-pronged wild ginseng had also been discovered on the surrounding mountains.
