This is Lecture 9 of the course Structure of English, taught by Randy J. LaPolla in 2016, at Nanyang Technological University. It is really an introduction to MAK Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics, using English as an example. But students have found this a very useful analysis of English. The analysis here should only be seen as the theory as applied to English; the SFL analysis of other languages might look very different, so the categories proposed here for analysing English should not be blindly applied to other languages.
