Salimbeni Carmelo is a record, 5 time Eritrea's cycling champion (1962, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1980). Salimbeni was also one of four of an all-Eritrean cycling olympians (Fessehazion Greyesus, Salimbeni Carmelo, Solomon Embaye, and Yemane Negasi) that were forced to ride under the Ethiopian flag at the Games of the XVIII Olympiad or Tokyo 1964, and he was also one of five, again an all-Eritrean cycling olympians (Fessehazion Greyesus, Mehari Ogbamichael, Salimbeni Carmelo, Tekeste Woldu-Gigante and Yemane Negassi) that participated at the Games of the XIX Olympiad or México 1968. Salimbeni is believed to have won over 300 competitions in his carrier.
