Haunted Charleville Castle visited by Lord Byron - Wednesday Addams' Nevermore Academy in Tullamore!

Charleville Castle — one of Ireland's most haunted and mysterious places, hidden in an ancient oak forest just outside Tullamore, County Offaly, Ireland. Built between 1798 and 1814 by Charles William Bury, the 1st Earl of Charleville, and designed by the legendary architect Francis Johnston — the same man behind Dublin's GPO — this Gothic masterpiece took 14 years to complete. From the moment you step through its gates, you feel like you've entered another world. Among its most celebrated visitors was the poet Lord Byron, who was so captivated by Charleville that he always returned here whenever he visited Ireland — hosting wild, extravagant parties within its ancient walls. The castle's flamboyant spirit clearly suited his own. The castle is widely considered one of the most haunted buildings in Europe. The most famous spirit is little Harriet — daughter of the 3rd Earl of Charleville, who tragically fell to her death on the grand staircase in 1861 at just eight years old. Visitors and staff regularly report hearing a child's laughter echoing through empty rooms, or catching a glimpse of a small girl with golden ringlets on the stairs. The surrounding oak forest — one of Ireland's last ancient primordial woodlands — was once the sacred hunting ground of Irish Druids, adding another layer of mystery to this already extraordinary place. Charleville Castle was chosen as a filming location for the second season of Netflix's hit series Wednesday — serving as the iconic Nevermore Academy. And honestly, it's hard to imagine a more perfect fit. Today Charleville Castle is managed by a volunteer-run charitable trust dedicated to its restoration.
