While the nuts support Indigenous tribes' livelihoods, collectors have a tough job. They have to hike deep into the jungle, avoiding deadly falling nuts and wildlife, all to haul 100-pound loads back out. And now their industry is at risk because of low prices for their nuts and illegal clear-cutting of the rainforest.
