Reusing the waters of the Vajont Dam to produce clean energy is the goal of a new project being implemented under the patronage of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region in the municipality of Erto e Casso. In today's video, we won't discuss Vajont's past history, but rather its present, because after years of debate and ideas on how to reuse the stream's water, this time it seems they're serious about it. A very detailed project has been presented, a company is proposing it, and a region is supporting the idea. In short, perhaps we've arrived at Vajont 2.0. However, it's important to emphasize right away that this project involves a new hydroelectric plant that has nothing to do with the old dam, nor does it involve the creation of an artificial lake. It simply relies on the water that currently flows from the overpass tunnel into the gorge, cascading into a waterfall. The plant, equipped with twin Pelton turbines, will be entirely excavated inside the mountain, making it invisible from the outside. It will produce 13.3 MWh of renewable energy annually, thus avoiding the emission of 4,400 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere by reducing production from fossil fuels.
