The story follows Ketki (Madhuri Dixit), a strong-willed and educated woman who is newly married to Vijay (Ayub Khan), a seemingly idealistic and loving man. However, as time passes, Vijay falls under the influence of the corrupt local power structure, especially a ruthless landlord-politician Tirpat Singh (Mohan Joshi). Ketki slowly realizes that her life is being dictated by the same oppressive forces that dominate the lives of other women in the village. She witnesses domestic violence, injustice, and the crushing burden of patriarchy on women like Champa (Shabana Azmi), a poor woman who is repeatedly abused and humiliated. Refusing to remain silent, Ketki rebels against the system, her husband, and the village leadership.
