TRIBUN-GOWA.COM - Dozens of students protested in front of the Gowa Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) office on Jl. Masjid Raya, Sungguminasa, Somba Opu District, Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, on Monday (September 1, 2025). The protesters, students from UIN Alauddin Makassar, are members of the Jelajah Jarak (Distance Exploration) Alliance. Observations at the location revealed that they had been besieging the Gowa DPRD office since 2:00 PM WITA (Central Indonesian Time). Joint personnel from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) guarded several locations. Reski, Field General of the Jelajah Jarak Alliance, stated that his group had several demands. Among them, urging the resignation of members of the House of Representatives (DPR) from the central government down to the district and city levels. "Because DPR members lack capacity and do not side with the people," he said. Furthermore, his group is urging the enforcement of National Police reforms. He recalled that a few days ago, an online journalist was killed after being run over by a Brimob tactical vehicle during a demonstration in Jakarta. "Remove Sri Mulyani. Uphold the rule of law," he explained. He acknowledged that his team had been received directly by the leadership and members of the Gowa Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD). The Gowa DPRD plans to schedule a meeting to hear their concerns. "We're taking 50 people with us, and they'll go to the Jl. Alauddin Makassar intersection," he said. Gowa Police Chief, AKBP Muhammad Aldy Sulaiman, is directly leading security for this demonstration. Using a loudspeaker, Senior Commissioner of Police Muhammad Aldy Sulaiman apologized for the incident involving Affan, an online motorcycle taxi driver in Jakarta. "Regarding the actions of this individual, the National Police leadership has taken firm action, investigated, and detained him," he said. Senior Commissioner of Police Aldy expressed his deep empathy for the other victims and deaths in Makassar due to the demonstrations. "Many state facilities were damaged, including the provincial and city DPRD offices, which also used public funds. So, if they are damaged and burned, who is responsible for protecting them? The people must protect them," Aldy emphasized. He believes that if offices and public facilities are damaged or burned, the public will also suffer losses. "I, the Gowa Police Chief, am very grateful to you for conveying your aspirations peacefully," he said. Tina Haji Tino, Deputy Speaker III of the Gowa DPRD from the Nasdem faction, said that her office had met with and received the aspirations of the demonstrators. She mentioned that two groups of students were accepted: students from the Indonesian Muslim Student Association (PMII) and students from the UIN Alauddin Makassar campus. "God willing, we will follow up on this in the future. We have scheduled a dialogue meeting to hear their aspirations," he concluded. He added that all the protesters' aspirations would be accepted.
