Diane Downs Rambles to Social Services in 1983 Taped Phone Call
The tape starts with Diane calling Children Services Division in Eugene, Oregon. Diane had recently lost custody of her children. Danny and Christie were placed in protective custody within the state’s Children Services Division. This is prior to be charged with murder and assault. On October 2, 1983, Diane Downs husband organized a secret visit between Diane and Christie—directly violating a court order barring her from having any contact with her children. Diane would be charged with contempt of court and a hearing would be set for the 9th of December. Reviewing Oregon newspaper dates, this had to be recorded sometime between Diane visiting Christie on October 2nd of 1983 and Diane’s contempt of court hearing on December 9th of that year. Diane asks for Susan Staffel, a caseworker assigned to her surviving children, Danny and Christie. Susan is unavailable and Diane asks the receptionist to have Susan give her a call back. Diane talked a little bit about Susan Staffel in the recent 2025 hearing. Diane then answers the phone to Rick Attig on the line. Rick is a reporter at The Springfield News who asks for comment on the visit with her daughter, Christie which Diane’s husband would be charged with setting up. Prosecutor Fred Hugi called the secret meeting at the contempt of court hearing, “A life-threatening situation.” See video on DD-TV: • Diane Downs' secret visit with Christie │... Further research on Rick Attig shows he was part of a group of Oregonian writers that won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Diane calls Children Services Division again asking for Susan Staffel. Diane is placed on hold because Susan is on another line. Susan Staffel picks up the line and Diane starts rambling. Diane puts Susan on hold to briefly talk with Carrie from KMTR—a television station in Eugene, Oregon. Back on the line, Diane continues sparring with Susan for several minutes, apparently about "the insurance on the kids.” After Diane makes random comment, Susan Staffel abruptly ends the conversation with, “Diane, I need to leave right now,” and the tape ends.
