James Webb vient de voir Uranus pour la première fois — et c'est terrifiant
For 37 years, Uranus was the planet everyone ignored. A blurry flyby by Voyager 2 in 1986 showed us a smooth, blue blob, with no storms, no weather, no drama, and we classified it as the most boring world in the solar system. Then, the James Webb Space Telescope observed it in infrared, and the calm blue disguise crumbled. In this video, we delve into what Webb actually revealed: a planet rolling on its side in perpetual twilight, the coldest world in the solar system at nearly minus 371 degrees Fahrenheit, an atmosphere that reeks of rotten eggs and would suffocate and freeze you in the same breath, a bottomless ocean where it rains solid diamonds, vertical rings standing like a target, a magnetic field deflected so far from its axis that it wobbles, and a hidden moon so small that Webb only discovered it in 2025. We also visit Verona Rupes on the moon Miranda, which is arguably the highest cliff in the solar system, where a single step over the edge means a full ten-minute fall. This is the story of how the planet we once dismissed turned out to be one of the strangest and most hostile places we've ever found, and why it might be the most ordinary type of world in the entire galaxy.
