Ulva Island is a pest free island meaning that the New Zealand bird species can thrive there! It’s one of the best places to see New Zealand birds. It’s a 5-minute journey on the Ulva Island Ferry to get to Ulva Island. Ulva Island is connected with a network of walking tracks to explore the island. The best way is to take it slow to see more birds. Ulva Island is home to a great deal and abundance of species: Kiwi birds, tui, kaka, kakariki/parakeet, oyster catchers, wood pigeon, yellowhead, weka and so much more! We spend most time with the weka and weka chicks but we see all of these birds except for a kiwi bird! You’re best chances are to arrive early morning to see a kiwi bird. For one of the best places to see wildlife in New Zealand, we couldn’t recommend Ulva Island more as it’s the best example of bird sanctuary in New Zealand.
