All building materials were modularly assembled on the ground and then disassembled and hoisted up the mountain by helicopter. This medium-sized mountain hut combines modern functionality with low-impact, lightweight, and environmentally friendly construction methods. It is scheduled to begin trial operation in August and will operate on a reservation-only basis, aiming to improve the accommodation quality for hikers and meet the needs of high-altitude emergency shelters. Located below the ridgeline between Qilai North Peak and the main peak, beside a fir forest, at an altitude of approximately 3345 meters, this medium-sized mountain hut is the newly completed Qilai Mountain Hut. Weighing only 27 tons, it employs low-impact, lightweight construction methods, using a steel frame combined with domestically produced timber. It retains the natural breathability and moisture-wicking properties of the wood, making future maintenance easier—a truly "breathing" mountain hut. In terms of facilities, the hut has 40 beds. Common areas include a dining/social room, kitchen, changing room, drying area, and a wet area for shoes and rain gear. It is also equipped with oil-water separators and eco-friendly toilets. For water, the water source is rainwater and snowmelt; electricity is generated by a solar and wind power storage system, providing lighting and mobile phone charging. The construction of the Qilai Mountain Hut, at high altitude, was extremely arduous, beginning three years ago with site selection and design. All building materials were first modularly assembled on the ground, then disassembled and airlifted up the mountain by helicopter for construction. It was successfully completed and inspected in July, and the Taichung National Park Administration plans to begin trial operation in August, with a reservation and fee system. The hut features calligraphy by renowned painter Cheng Chih-kuei, a specially designed tree branch shape connecting the central pillar and roof, and numerous structural metal panels engraved with the Qilai name. It also includes bird-proof window stickers. Once completed and operational, the Qilai Mountain Hut will connect with Pingfeng Mountain Hut, Judong Refuge Hut, and the Panshi Zhongfeng, Bei'an Sancha, and Marble Refuge Huts along the eastern ridge of Qilai, forming a more complete high-altitude refuge network and providing mountaineers with a safer climbing environment.
