The Original Croissant Recipe - Was it Austrian?
Join us for another food history video where we look at the claim that croissants are actually Austrian, not French. However, is that actually the case? In this video we explore whether they actually are and how an Austrian in Belle Epoque Paris changed baked goods forever. We'll go over the famous story of the Turkish siege of Vienna and how Marie Antoinette brought the famous pastry from Vienna to France. You've probably already guessed that this story has some parts that "can be questioned". Then we'll look into the real story of how France's favourite pastries, the viennoiserie, came to be named after the Austrian capital. This video is largely based on the book "August Zang and the French Croissant" by Jim Chevalier (2nd edition, 2009) and the sources cited therein. Other references are mentioned in the video.
