Walau lahir sebagai anak petani, namun bakat dan kemampuan melukis Djoko Pekik sangat melegenda sejak bergabung dengan Sanggar Bumi Tarung. Saat bergabung dengan Lekra, ia ditangkap lantaran dituduh bagian dari simpatisan PKI. Dirinya mendapat penyiksaan selama tujuh tahun berada di dalam penjara. Namun penjara tidak menyurutkan niatnya untuk melukis tema-tema mengenai sosial. Salah satunya "Berburu Celeng" yang dihargai Rp1 miliar, bertepatan dengan jatuhnya rezim Orde Baru di tahun 1998.
