Ava had made waves via her supporting role in 1946’s The Killers, though she still needed a vehicle to prove that she could play the lead. 1949’s The Great Sinner didn’t end up being that vehicle, though it did mark the start of the actress’s lifelong friendship with Gregory. The two would share the screen once more in 1952’s The Snows of Kilimanjaro. The Snows of Kilimanjaro was a success, solidifying Gregory and Ava’s shared status as two of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Though the two would only work together once more, they would remain lifelong friends. While most people believe that Ava Gardner coasted by on her looks and was never a great actor, Gregory believed otherwise. Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner remained friends until the actress’s 1990 death. The two were so close that Ava asked the actor to write a chapter of her autobiography. Though the two had a profound friendship, they were never romantically involved. When the pair first met, Gregory was married to his first wife. Gregory and his first wife were still married when he and Ava filmed their second picture together, and the actor had moved on to his second wife by the time he and Ava reunited for 1959’s On the Beach. On the Beach was a critical failure, and Gregory and Ava never worked together again. Today, film buffs are often surprised to learn about the pair’s close friendship.
