The mountain tour begins at the Traunstein turnaround parking lot and continues through the picturesque Kaltenbach wilderness to the entrance to the Zierlersteig trail. The first part of the Zierlersteig offers a few challenging sections, including the Surprise (789 m), the Zierlerberg (1245 m), and short UIAA I sections, but nothing comparable to the final wall. The final wall begins at a UIAA II wall book, followed by several more challenging sections, which, due to the lack of markings, can become even more challenging if you don't follow the trail exactly. Only at the end, where it joins the Hernlersteig directly below the Gmundnerhütte, does the trail become easier again. The detour to the Traunstein (1691 m) at the end of a very demanding climb is well deserved. The descent is via the Mairalmsteig.
