The Woman Who Killed Guests at Her Hotel and Got Away With It
The story of the country's First FEMALE SERIAL KILLER, Lavinia Fisher, is part legend and part mystery. It's a fascinating look back in time at how a WOMAN accused of heinous crimes was punished by the criminal justice system. ** JOIN US FOR A LIVE STREAM AT 7:30 pm CST/6:30 pm MST AFTER THIS VIDEO PLAYS on Feb. 7, at 7pm CST/6pm MST ** In 1820, Lavinia Fisher and her husband, John Fisher, were hanged for the crime of highway robbery in Charleston, South Carolina. Chris rewinds their story, with the Old City Jail in Charleston -- where the couple were housed before their executions -- as a backdrop. Lavinia and John ran a hotel back in the early 1800s where traders were said to check in ... but they never checked out, or were ever heard from again. Legend has it that the pretty and enticing Lavinia would woo travelers with oleander-laced tea. Then, when the guests were asleep on the bed in their room in the middle of the night, she and John would release a trap door that plummeted the bed and guest into a pit below. John, as the story goes, killed the men and took their belongings. While the couple was never tried on murder charges, they were convicted of highway robbery, a crime punishable by hanging.
