The Asia-New Zealand Foundation's survey shows 43 percent of respondents now see China as a friend against 39 percent who view the United States as a friend. Just 23 percent see China as a threat to New Zealand, while 35 percent believe the United States is a threat. At the same time, 81 percent of New Zealanders see developing ties with Asia as important.
