June brings to mind D-Day and WW II. My father was a WWII veteran and I wonder what was the music he and his comrades listened to while serving in Europe. What was their favorite song? You may be surprised to know that the favorite song of WWII soldiers, Allied and Axis alike, was “Lili (pronounced Lily) Marleen”. “Lili Marleen” started as a poem written by a German soldier in WW I. It was set to music by a German composer in 1939 and recorded by Lale Anderson. The recording was not popular until an Axis radio station in Belgrade started broadcasting it to german soldiers in Europe and North Africa. It became instantly popular with the troops, so popular that the radio station used it as their sign off song, broadcast at 9:57 PM every night. It was also very popular with Allied soldiers, so popular that the Allied Command created an English version which was recorded by several female singers of the time. The recording I have for you is the English version sung by British singer Vera Lynn. The video displays a photograph of Vera Lynn visiting British troops in Burma during the war. You can see that the men are absolutely giddy with excitement over Vera’s visit. As you listen to Vera’s sweet voice and the emotional lyrics, think about what this meant to the lonely troops stationed far from home during war time. No wonder it was so popular.
