Dr.; Uludağ University, Faculty of Theology Quran The Bible The Dead Sea Scrolls The History of Evil, Jeffrey Burton Russell Various Internet Articles In ancient times, sacred writings frequently elaborated on the conflict between good and evil. Because in ancient times, people had to confront the challenges of the coexistence of good and evil. The common belief was that a god, the supreme source of good, could not be responsible for evil. This led people to believe that an evil, divine force was behind evil. At least, that's what we think so now. The roots of the word "Satan" have different meanings in various languages and cultures. The word is thought to derive from the Arabic root "shatn" (to move away from, to depart from, to oppose, to deviate from right and good), or "shayt" (to burn with anger). In Arabic, "Satan" is defined as a being who has turned away from goodness and compassion and has perished by fire. This definition is an explanation based on Islamic sources and within the Arabic context. In Hebrew, the word "satan," which corresponds to "devil," derives from the root "stn," meaning "to enmity, accuse, or oppose," or from the root "sut/sth," meaning "to wander, to move, to disturb, to go astray; to be unfaithful/unfaithful." In fact, linguists differ on the origin of the word "satan." Some argue that the word originates from Arabic and derives its theological meaning from the Judeo-Christian tradition, while others suggest that it passed from Hebrew to Arabic, meaning "jinn" in Jewish tradition and considered a "superhuman being" by pre-Islamic Arabs, and that these two meanings merged in Islam. The Greek word "diabolos" and the English word "devil" are terms that define Satan as "accuser" or "slanderer," explaining the role of Satan in different cultural and religious contexts. However, we generally find the same conclusion. Let's examine how the concept of Satan has been perceived from ancient times to modern times. One of the most important and comprehensive examples of these studies is by American historian and religious studies scholar Jeffrey Burton Russell. Russell has published a four-volume series titled "The History of Evil." These works provide an in-depth exploration of Satan and the perception of evil, presented in a style that is easily understandable to readers.
