Polly Elwes visits Portsmouth Harbour, where the local children follow still engage in the time-honoured tradition of mudlarking. They shout at adults on the ferry pier to throw money down onto the muddy harbour floor, then clamour to find it. At the end of a hard day's mudlarking, they spend whatever money they've amassed on a trip to the cinema, or on sweets. It's a dirty job, but is it little more than begging? The mothers of the mud-caked kids don't think so, and the children themselves seem to love it. Originally broadcast 1 September, 1960.
