Comércio is one of Salvador's most beautiful historical neighborhoods. Its old mansions, mixed with newer constructions, possess an architectural richness that dates back to the early days of Brazilian colonization. It is located in a region of Bahia's capital that grew from the Port of Salvador and expanded into the city's interior. For many years, the neighborhood was Salvador's financial center, but with the city's growth and expansion into other areas, many public and financial institutions migrated to these new regions, partly diminishing the neighborhood's commercial importance. Today, the neighborhood struggles to find a way to reconcile the preservation of its historical heritage with potential new business opportunities.
