The risk of such problems varies greatly depending on how you use your knowledge of pipe threads. For example, many people think that wrapping sealant tape around all the threads will prevent leaks, but that's a mistake. In fact, we often see failures caused by this approach. It's important to know that there are some threads for which sealing tape is ineffective. In fact, there are surprisingly few types of threads used in plumbing, with only three types. However, even with only three, it's common to make mistakes by combining them incorrectly or using the wrong connection method. Last time, we explained mechanical connection screws. First, let's briefly explain the basics of threaded connections for piping. There are three types of threads used in piping. ① Screws primarily intended for mechanical connections: These are used when leakage is not a consideration. ② Screws primarily intended for airtight connections: These are used when leakage is unacceptable. ③ Screws for attaching water faucets: These are designed for adjusting the tightening when installing a faucet. Why do you need to know about these types of threads? The first reason is that types ① and ② should never be used together. Using the wrong combination can result in damage to the threads or leaks, so care must be taken to avoid making a mistake. However, because the thread pitch and threads are the same, they can be combined without realizing it, causing a lot of problems. The second reason is The difference in joining methods. When joining threads, we often imagine wrapping sealing tape around them to prevent leaks. However, only threads ② and ③ can be joined by wrapping sealing tape around them, while sealing tape cannot be expected to stop leaks with thread ①. Not only is it ineffective, but in some cases, forcing the thread to tighten can result in damage. For these reasons, mastering the correct knowledge can help avoid problems. Let's now explain what a hermetic joint screw is in detail. The "mechanical" part of a hermetic joint screw means that it is a screw that "can withstand a sealed state," or to put it simply, it is a screw that "does not leak." So it is a screw to be used in situations where leakage is unacceptable, and is a screw that has been improved to prevent leaks from the G thread, a mechanical joint screw explained last time. There are many situations in which leakage is unacceptable, such as: When buried When concealed, e.g., under floors, in walls or ceilings When repairs are not easily possible When constantly subjected to water pressure or other forces. Sealant joint screws are threads with a tapered thread that tapers to a point, and are specified in Japanese Industrial Standard JIS B0203. The screw symbol is R, and they are also called R-threads. A distinctive feature of these threads is that, because the thread diameter is tapered, the crest and valley interlock tightly when tightened to a certain extent, making them less likely to loosen and less likely to leak.
