Jeanna Criscitiello – Jeanne Dielman (Live at EMST, Athens)

Jeanne Dielman is a live excerpt from ... and then there was EVE, an evolving interdisciplinary artistic practice by Jeanna Criscitiello. Through voice, music, text, sound, research and performance, ... and then there was EVE develops a collaborative and polyphonic inquiry into the construction of feminine mythologies, embodiment and transformation. This performance was presented at the EMST National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, Greece, in 2024. Inspired by Chantal Akerman's landmark film Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, the work transforms a study of the protagonist's repetitive hand gestures into a vocal and electronic composition. During the performance, Jeanna embodies these gestures, exploring labour, ritual, feminine identity and the possibility of rewriting inherited narratives. Appearing alone on stage, the artist performs every voice and musical layer live, moving fluidly between concert, lecture and living myth. ... and then there was EVE has also been presented at the Royal Museums of Art and History, the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent, the Jewish Museum of Belgium, KANAL–Centre Pompidou, La Loge, New York University Tisch School of the Arts and The Tank.
