Since 1573, there has been a watchman's booth above the sacristy in Mainz Cathedral, formerly used to accompany the liturgy and give signals for the service. This space behind the window remained unused for many years. In 2003, for the episcopal jubilee of Cardinal Karl Lehmann, Spanish trumpets were installed there, allowing the cathedral organist to play a bishop's fanfare or to startle the American security guards. The so-called "Cardinal Trumpet" is a famous organ stop.
