The only outlet for the Black Sea's waters is the Bosphorus. The Black Sea has a water level 40 cm higher than the Sea of ​​Marmara. Furthermore, due to low evaporation and the rivers that feed the Black Sea, its salinity is approximately twice that of the Sea of ​​Marmara. Therefore, there is a constant surface current from the Black Sea to the Sea of ​​Marmara. Because the Sea of ​​Marmara is saltier than the Black Sea, a bottom current forms from the Sea of ​​Marmara to the Black Sea. This bottom current is not as regular and rapid as the surface current. Although very rare, the undercurrent and surface current sometimes mix, creating small eddy currents. The Bosphorus has a geographical structure that narrows and widens at certain points. While the current is slow in wide areas, it accelerates when it reaches narrower areas. The area where Rumelihisarı is located is the area where the narrowness lasts the longest and therefore the current is fastest. Ships coming from the Black Sea are forced to approach Rumelihisarı due to the faster current in this area. Fatih Sultan Mehmet selected the most suitable site for the fortress after evaluating the geographical structure of the strait with experts.
