Gudimallam, though a small village, is best known for being India's first Shiva Temple, an ancient Hindu temple dating back to the Andhra Satavahanas era dedicated to Lord Shiva, which houses Anandavalli Devi, Srivalli Devasena Subramanya Swamy, Surya Bhagwan, Vinayaka Temple etc. It seems from the inscriptions found here that it was built during the 1st and 2nd century AD. However, after extensive research by scholars, the Archaeological Survey of India has determined that this Shiva temple dates back to the second century BC. In 1973, this temple was recognized as a national treasure. Parasurama is reputed to have worshiped the Shivalinga in this temple which is older than the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam. The temple is later than the Lingam, and the existing building dates back to the times of the Chola and Vijayanagaram kings, which means that the temple was built a thousand years after the installation of the sculpture. The linga was probably originally placed in the open, surrounded by a rectangular stone, inside a wooden structure.
