Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave her first interview since leaving office last year. She called the war in Ukraine a "huge tragedy," a conflict on which her comments had been eagerly awaited. In Germany, she has been criticized for maintaining a lukewarm stance toward Russia during her 16 years in office. Even in recent months, Merkel had said she did not wish to comment so as not to undermine the current German government and that she supported all efforts to end the conflict.
