WIBG 99 Philadelphia - John Records Landecker w. Paul Revere of the Raiders - April 1 1971 - Radio Aircheck This aircheck features Chicago radio legend, John Records Landecker. Landecker became a Chicago radio institution after spending decades on air ar WLS, WLS-FM, The Loop FM 98 WLUP, WJMK, & 720 WGN. This aircheck features Landecker in his pre-Chicago days, when he was hosting evenings in Philly at WIBG. He first used the name Scott Walker on WIBG, before using his real name. On this recording, you'll hear John with his guest, Paul Revere of the Raiders. 99 WIBG Philadelphia was one of the most influential AM Top 40 radio stations in the country, playing a major role in shaping Philadelphia’s music and youth culture during the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s. Broadcasting at 990 AM, WIBG became famous for its high-energy presentation, hit music, and legendary DJs who helped define the sound of the era. The station was a fierce competitor to WFIL, and the rivalry between the two created one of the most memorable radio battles in American broadcasting history. WIBG’s tight playlists, catchy jingles, and strong personalities made it a daily soundtrack for a generation of Philadelphia listeners. By the mid-1970s, changing music tastes, the rise of FM radio, and shifting audience habits began to challenge AM Top 40 stations nationwide, including WIBG. In 1977, 99 WIBG signed off its Top 40 era, bringing an emotional close to a station that had dominated Philadelphia radio for decades. This video features audio from WIBG’s final days, capturing the sound, voices, and moments that marked the end of an unforgettable chapter in radio history. For fans of classic radio, vintage airchecks, and Philadelphia broadcasting, WIBG’s farewell & WIBBAGE wake, remains a powerful reminder of AM radio’s golden age.
