The representation and expression of emotions have transformed throughout history. In the Middle Ages, there were more than a dozen words to describe different types of shame. Emotions, or movements of the soul, are shaped by social learning. They are thus a performance of the self under the gaze of others. Emotions build human societies as much as reason, art, or any other activity!
