In this video I have elaborated Psychoanalytic literary theory, one of the most influential theories in modern literary Criticism. Psychoanalytic literary theory by Sigmund Freud is also known as Psychoanalysis theory or psychoanalysis more commonly. Sigmund Freud is the founding father of psychoanalysis, a therapeutic technique developed by him to treat the patient with neurotic disease or hysteria. The method of Psychoanalysis was first developed around the year 1890s by Austrian Neurologist Sigmund Freud. Firstly I have discussed introduction of Psychoanalytic literarily criticism and how the method of psychoanalysis is useful for us to understand a work of literature. As we have discussed in the video that Psychoanalytic literary criticism is a way of analyzing and interpreting literary texts (novels or dramas) by using a therapeutic technique developed by Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud in nineteenth century. I have also discussed the classic method of doing Psychoanalysis that is known as Psychoanalysis technique (1890s): The classic method of doing this is to get the patient to talk freely, in such a way that the repressed fears and conflicts which are causing the problems are brought into the conscious mind and openly faced, rather than remaining 'buried' in the unconscious. Now it was necessary for me to tell the viewers about three states of mind or levels of consciousness as explained by Sigmund Freud. According to Sigmund Freud there were three states of mind that are given below: 1. Conscious mind or level of consciousness 2. Preconscious or subconscious mind 3. Unconscious mind I have discussed examples of conscious and unconscious mind and explained it with help of Freud analogy of Iceberg. Unconscious comes into being by Freudian process of Repression. Oedipus complex is one of the important part of this video generally and more specifically an important part of Freud Psychoanalytic theory. Oedipus complex can simply be defined as the sexual desire of son toward mother. Theory of Oedipus complex is one of the main contributions of Sigmund Freud. Oedipus complex refers to the unresolved desire of a child for sexual fulfillment through a parent of the opposite sex. If the boy is sexually, drawn to his mother there is an Oedipus complex (from Sophocles Oedipus Rex) and if the girl is sexually, drawn to her father, the resultant is known as Electra complex. Further I have discussed the process of defense mechanism by Sigmund Freud. I have explained that according to Sigmund Freud states that unconscious desires or drives cause different psychological problems such as anxiety I have defined Defense mechanism as the process by which the content of our unconscious are kept in the unconscious to avoid unpleasant feelings, painful admission or recognition. After explaining the defense mechanism I have deeply elaborated the idea of Interpretation of dreams by Freud. Sigmund Freud believed that dreams are windows to unconscious mind. During sleep the unconscious is free to express itself. Further I have discussed the three partite model of human personality by Sigmund Freud. I have discussed that according to Freud there are three main parts of human Personality. 1. The Id 2. The Ego 3. The Superego In this part firstly I have elaborated the concept of Id by Sigmund Freud with example. After discussing Id as the most primitive and Instinctive component of human personality, I have elaborated the second component of human personality. According to Freud structure of personality has second important component that work on reality principle. Freud named this part as the ego. The third component is the superego that works according to morals of society or morality principle. Finally I have applied psychoanalysis on D.H Lawrence novel sons and lovers. Psychoanalytic reading of Sons and lovers revealed that the Protagonist of novel Paul Morel was suffering from Oedipus complex having deep affection for her mother Mrs. Morel. The second example of Psychoanalysis is the application of Psychoanalysis on Shakespeare’s most famous revenge tragedy Hamlet.
