Antique Silver Shopping in Auction with David Harper

Come with me and I’ll show you a magnificent, unusual and beautiful collection of antique silver objects. This is viewing day in auction, but I’ll also let you know how much the items sold for too. We’ll take a look at some ‘Trencher’ silver salts. The Trencher design is a salt pout made to sit on the dining table, obviously to serve salt. However, the Trencher was not made with a spoon, so the diner would use their own knife or fingers to take a pinch of salt. People often think that this design of salt is missing its spoon…but, it’s not! Keeping on a dining theme, I’ll show you some serious dessert dining pieces! A pair of silver sugar castors. In a much earlier Georgian design, but made in 1937 This is Queen Elizabeth II’s jubilee year (70 years on the throne) and so I’ll show you a silver coffee pot made during our current queens reign. It looks like it was made in the Georgian period, circa 1770, but it was actually made in 1971! My favourite item has got to be the 19th century Dutch silver creamer. Modelled as a cow, it positively bulges with character and even a little comedy! Estimated at £200-£300. This was always going to do well! There’s a pair of good George II silver chamber sticks to take a quick look at. Worth around £2000 Finnaly, I’ll show you an unusual item. A 19th century silver and gilt punch ladle. Not the best thing in the world to sell today, the market is tough for these things and it’ll sell for a bargain price!
